Philothea Prayers and Novenas

Most Holy Virgin Mary, appointed by God to be the Help of Christians, we choose you as the Mother and Protectress of our Home.
We ask you to favour us with your powerful protection. Preserve our home from every danger: from fire, flood, lightning, storm, earthquake, thieves, vandals and from every other danger.
Bless us, protect us, keep as your own all the people who dwell in this home; protect them from all accidents and misfortunes, but above all obtain for them the most important grace of avoiding sin.
Mary help of Christians, pray for all those who live in this home which is consecrated to you for all time. Amen.

Ever blessed and glorious Joseph, kind and loving father, and helpful friend of all in sorrow! You are the good father and protector of orphans, the defender of the defenceless, the patron of those in need and sorrow. Look kindly on my request. My sins have drawn down on me the just displeasure of my God, and so I am surrounded with unhappiness. To you, loving guardian of the Family of Nazareth, I go for help and protection. Listen, then, I beg you, with fatherly concern, to my earnest prayers, and obtain for me the favours I ask.

I ask it by the infinite mercy of the eternal Son of God, which moved Him to take our nature and to be born into this world of sorrow.

I ask it by the weariness and suffering you endured when you found no shelter at the inn of Bethlehem for the holy Virgin, nor a house where the Son of God could be born. Then, being everywhere refused, you had to allow the Queen of Heaven to give birth to the world's Redeemer in a cave.

I ask it by that painful torture you felt at the prophecy of holy Simeon, which declared the Child Jesus and His holy Mother future victims of our sins and of their great love for us.

I ask it through your sorrow and pain of soul when the angel declared to you that the life of the Child Jesus was sought by His enemies. From their evil plan you had to flee with Him and His Blessed Mother to Egypt. I ask it by all the suffering, weariness, and labours of that long and dangerous journey.

I ask it by all your care to protect the Sacred Child and His Immaculate Mother during your second journey, when you were ordered to return to your own country. I ask it by your peaceful life in Nazareth where you met with so many joys and sorrows.
I ask it by your great distress when the adorable Child was lost to you and His Mother for three days. I ask it by your joy at finding Him in the Temple, and by the comfort you found at Nazareth, while living in the company of the Child Jesus. I ask it by the wonderful submission He showed in His obedience to you.
I ask it by the perfect love and conformity you showed in accepting the Divine order to depart from this life, and from the company of Jesus and Mary.
I ask it by the joy which filled your soul, when the Redeemer of the world, triumphant over death and hell, entered into the possession of His kingdom and led you into it with special honours.
I ask it through Mary's glorious Assumption, and through that endless happiness you have with her in the presence of God.
O good father! I beg you, by all your sufferings, sorrows, and joys, to hear me and obtain for me what I ask.
(make your request)
Obtain for all those who have asked my prayers everything that is useful to them in the plan of God. Finally, my dear patron and father, be with me and all who are dear to me in our last moments, that we may eternally sing the praises of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Amen
Saint Joseph, Master of interior life, teach me to pray, to suffer and to be silent.
Saint Joseph organise my day today.

Dear Saint Francis de Sales, by your life and in your writings you teach us to follow Christ by loving God our Father, and all other persons, our brothers and sisters. Obtain for us the grace to be led by the Holy Spirit, so that we show our love for God by fidelity to prayer, by diligence in our work, by cheerful service of others.
Teach us to be patient and forgiving, kind and helpful to all. Help us to face the difficulties and sufferings of life with a heart full of trust in God our ever-loving Father.
Dear Saint Francis de Sales, while on earth you were always ready to help those in need. Come to my aid and obtain for me from God, through the intercession of Our Lady, the special grace for which I now pray.

[Pause] O gentle Saint Francis, bless our home with your presence. May our hearts glow with love for God and a sincere concern for others, so that our lives may show in word and deed the blessing of your patronage. Amen

Saint Gabriel the Archangel, I venerate you as the Angel of the Incarnation, because God specially appointed you to bear the messages concerning the God-Man to Daniel, Zechariah, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Give me a very tender and devoted love for the Incarnate Word and his Blessed Mother more like your own. I venerate you also as the “Strength from God” because you are the giver of God’s strength, consoler and comforter chosen to strengthen God’s faithful and teach them important truths. I ask for the grace of a special power of the will to strive for holiness of life.
Steady my resolutions; renew my courage; comfort and console me in the problems, trials and sufferings of daily living, as you consoled our Saviour in his agony and Mary in her sorrows and Joseph in his trials. I put my confidence in you. Saint Gabriel, I ask you especially for this favour: (mention your request). Through your earnest love for the Son of God made man and for his Blessed Mother I beg of you, intercede for me that my request may be granted, if it be God’s holy will.
Pray for us, Saint Gabriel the Archangel, that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and O Prince of the heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Jesus, Who because of Your burning love for us willed to be crucified and to shed Your Most Precious Blood for the redemption and salvation of our souls, look down upon us and grant the petition we ask for ...(mention here your intention)
We trust completely in Your Mercy.
Cleanse us from sin by Your Grace,
sanctify our work,
give us and all those who are dear to us our daily bread,
lighten the burden of our sufferings,
bless our families,
and grant to the nations, so sorely afflicted,
Your Peace, which is the only true peace,
so that by obeying Your Commandments
we may come at last to the glory of Heaven. Amen
We adore You O Christ and we bless You, Because of Your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.
Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory be…

Father of the Word made flesh, we await the coming of your Son,
for you are faithful to your promises of salvation and eternal life
May we prepare ourselves for the birth of your Son,
by meditating upon your word.
Through the Word made flesh may we learn to love each other,
so that Christ will find all of us waiting for him in joyful prayer at the Second Coming.
God of love and mercy, help us follow the example of Mary,
who believed the angel, hastened to help Elizabeth, and welcomed your Son in a cold, bare stable, warming him only with her exceeding love. God of love, bring us joy and peace;
help us to live united in respect and love for each other.

Let us pray
Hail, and blessed be the hour and moment
At which the Son of God was born
Of a most pure Virgin
At a stable at midnight in Bethlehem
In the piercing cold
At that hour vouchsafe, I beseech You,
To hear my prayers and grant my desires
(mention requests here).
Through Jesus Christ and His most Blessed Mother. Amen

Recite One Our Father, One Hail Mary and One Glory Be per day followed by the Novena Prayer:

Protect, O Lord our King, our families and the land of our birth.

May Your Reign, Your Kingdom, be recognized on earth, Amen

On each of the nine days please read one of the passages and meditate briefly over it:
1. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. He went in and said to her, 'Rejoice, you who enjoy God's favour! The Lord is with you' (Lk 1: 26-28).
2. Mary said, 'You see before you the Lord's servant, let it happen to me as you have said.' And the angel left her (Lk 1: 38).
3. And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; because he has looked upon the humiliation of his servant. Yes, from now onwards all generations will call me blessed (Lk 1:46-48).
4. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Look, he is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed - and a sword will pierce your soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare' (LK 2: 34-35).
5. Jesus said in answer, 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice' (Lk 8:21).
6. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, 'Woman, this is your son.' Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into his home (Jn 19: 25-27).
7. With one heart all these [the apostles] joined constantly in prayer, together with some women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers (Acts 1:4).
8. We know that when the earthly tent in which we dwell is destroyed we have a dwelling provided for us by God, a dwelling in the heavens, not made by hands but to last forever (2 Cor 5:1)
9. A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars (Rev 12:1).

Mary, Queen Assumed into Heaven, I rejoice that after years of heroic martyrdom on earth, you have at last been taken to the throne prepared for you in heaven by the Holy Trinity.
Lift my heart with you in the glory of your Assumption above the dreadful touch of sin and impurity. Teach me how small earth becomes when viewed from heaven. Make me realize that death is the triumphant gate through which I shall pass to your Son, and that someday my body shall rejoin my soul in the unending bliss of heaven.
From this earth, over which I tread as a pilgrim, I look to you for help. I ask for this favour:
(Mention your request).
When my hour of death has come, lead me safely to the presence of Jesus to enjoy the vision of my God for all eternity together with you. Amen.

O HOLY PATRONESS of those in need, St. Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favours has been called the Advocate of the Hopeless and even of the Impossible;
St. Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus that thou couldst obtain from Him whatsoever thou asks, on account of which all confidently have recourse to thee, expecting, if not always relief, at least comfort;
be propitious to our petition, showing thy power with God on behalf of thy suppliant; be lavish to us, as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of thine own devotion, and for the consolation of those who trust in thee.

We promise, if our petition is granted, to glorify thee by making known thy favour, to bless and sing thy praises forever. Relying then upon thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray thee grant our petition (here mention your request).
[Response: Obtain for us our request]
By the singular merits of thy childhood, Obtain for us our request
By thy perfect union with the Divine Will, ....
By thy heroic sufferings during thy married life,
By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of thy husband,
By the sacrifice of thy children rather than see them grievously offend God,
By thy miraculous entrance into the convent, By thy severe penances and thrice daily bloody scourging,
By the suffering caused by the wound thou didst receive from the thorn of the Crucified Saviour,
By the divine love which consumed thy heart, By that remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst exist for four years,
By the happiness with which thou didst part from thy trials to join thy Divine Spouse,
By the perfect example thou gave to people of every state of life.
Pray for us, O holy St. Rita, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray
O God, Who in Thine infinite tenderness hast vouchsafed to regard the prayer of Thy servant, Blessed Rita, and dost grant to her supplication that which is impossible to human foresight, skill and efforts, in reward for her compassionate love and firm reliance on Thy promise, have pity on our adversity and succour us in our calamities, that the unbeliever may know Thou art the recompense of the humble, the defence of the helpless, and the strength of those who trust in Thee, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen

O Blessed Francis de Sales,
who in your mortal life excelled in all virtues, especially in love of God and of neighbour,
I earnestly entreat you to take me under your immediate protection,
to obtain from God my perfect conversion,
and that of all sinners.

Teach me, O Father,
to fix my eyes on heaven,
that I may generously trample under foot
every obstacle that presents itself in my way,
and attain that degree of glory
which You in Your mercy hold out to me.
Obtain also that particular favour for which I now pray.
(pause, mention intention)

Assist us, O Lord, we beseech You,
through the merits of St. Francis de Sales.
That what our endeavours cannot obtain may be given us by his intercession.

Let us pray:
O God, who for the salvation of souls,
did will that St. Francis de Sales,
Your confessor and bishop,
should become all things to all men and women,
mercifully grant that we,
infused with the gentleness of his charity, guided by his teachings,
and sharing in his merits,
may obtain eternal happiness.

Through Christ our Lord.
